Staying safe at UoL

Posted 2 weeks ago

Your safety is important to us at Leicester University

Moving to university is exciting, but it’s natural to sometimes feel unsure or even unsafe in a new environment. That’s why here at Leicester we have a range of support and safety services in place, so you always know where to turn.

Security

Our security staff can help you if you feel distressed, unsafe, or in need of guidance on campus. They’re all first aid trained and can also provide practical safety tools like:

  • A D lock for your bike (to help prevent theft)
  • A personal alarm you can carry with you
  • A point of contact if you’ve lost any personal belongings

📍 In-person: Visit the Security Lodge opposite the Danielle Brown Sports Centre

📞 Telephone: 0116 252 2023

✉️ Email: control@le.ac.uk

🚨 In an emergency: 0116 252 2888

Someone is available to talk 24/7, and the Security Lodge is open weekdays between 9.00am and 5.00pm.

💡 Tip: Save both security numbers in your phone so you don’t need to search for them if you’re ever in a hurry.

Safezone app

We strongly recommend all students download the SafeZone app. It’s a quick way to get help through your phone if you need urgent assistance, first aid, or have an emergency on campus.

  • The app is privacy-protected—your location is only shared if you call for help or check in.
  • It won’t drain your phone battery.
  • It’s free and simple to use.

Once you’ve downloaded it, make sure you sign up with your University email to activate your account.

💡 Tip: Open the app and familiarise yourself with the buttons before you actually need it, it’ll make calling for help second nature.

Nightline

This service is a listening and support service run by students for students.

Open between 8pm-2am every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday night during term time. There is always someone to listen, it's a safe space to talk about your thoughts, feelings or anything that's troubling you. You don't need a specific reason to call or message - all are important!

Nightline service follows five core principles...

  • Anonymous
  • Confidential
  • Non-judgemental
  • Non-advisory
  • Non-directional

You can access it here - http://im.leicester.nightline.ac.uk/webim/

Everyday safety tips

As well as using the support services, there are simple steps you can take to look after yourself and your friends:

  • Avoid walking alone after dark, stick to lit routes and walk with friends when you can.
  • Share your location with a flatmate or friend if you’re heading home late.
  • Lock your bike securely with a D lock (available from Security).
  • Check your electricals are safe and PAT-tested before plugging them in.
  • Keep your valuables close, don’t leave bags, laptops or phones unattended.
  • Trust your instincts, if something feels off, head somewhere safe and contact Security.

Your safety and wellbeing are a top priority. Whether it’s through Security, SafeZone, or Nightline, there are always people here to support you. Don’t wait until things feel overwhelming—knowing where to go, who to contact, and how to stay safe day-to-day makes a huge difference.
