Keeping warm and sustainable

Beat the coming cold without sticking the heating on

Chilly nights and early morning frost are becoming a reality, but staying warm without inflating your energy bills or harming the planet is both achievable and rewarding. Whether you're from the UK or abroad, here are some practical, budget-friendly, and eco-conscious tips to help you stay cosy this winter.

Layer up before you turn up the heat

Before cranking up the radiator, consider adding an extra jumper, thermal leggings or thick socks. Wearing layers can raise your body temperature by up to 3°C, keeping you comfortable without increasing energy use. Materials like wool, cotton, and fleece are particularly effective at trapping heat.

Block draughts and close doors

A significant amount of heat escapes through windows and doors. Closing internal doors helps keep warmth in the rooms you use most. Use draught excluders or even rolled-up towels at the base of doors to prevent cold air from entering. Additionally, ensure windows are shut tightly at night to minimise heat loss. Just make sure not to overdo it on the block any fire exits!

Warm up with hot meals and drinks

There's nothing like a hot meal or drink to warm you from the inside. The NHS recommends having at least one hot meal a day during the winter months. Soups are a fantastic, nutritious option and are really easy to make. For an energy-saving tip, fill up a thermos with your favourite hot drink and top up your mug throughout the day instead of boiling the kettle multiple times.

Keep your extremities covered

Your feet, hands, and head are key areas where heat escapes. Invest in thick woolly socks, a cosy hat, and gloves to keep warm. Additionally, using a hot water bottle near your core can provide instant warmth during study sessions or while relaxing.

Stay active to generate heat

Sitting still for too long can make you feel cold. Try to move around regularly - simple activities like stretching, walking around your room, or doing a few exercises can help boost circulation and keep your body temperature up. If you're looking for a bigger boost, take advantage of the campus gym or join indoor fitness classes. Keeping active is not only good for staying warm but also great for your mental health.

Insulate your sleeping area

Consider using a weighted blanket or a fleece duvet cover to retain heat while you sleep. Some students have found that placing a fluffy throw on top of their bedsheets can provide a similar warm feeling. These simple additions can make a significant difference in maintaining warmth throughout the night.

Be a sustainable flatmate

Small actions can collectively make a big impact. Switch off appliances at the socket when not in use, and avoid leaving devices on standby. Only boil the amount of water you need in the kettle to save energy. Additionally, consider washing clothes at 30°C instead of higher temperatures to save around 40% of the energy used each year. Wait until you have a full load before putting on a wash.

By incorporating these tips into your daily routine, you can stay warm and sustainable throughout the colder months. Remember, every small action counts towards creating a more comfortable and eco-friendly living environment!
