Simple tips to save the planet

Recycling is a great way to reduce waste and help the environment, and it’s easier than you might think! With a few simple steps, you can recycle effectively in your accommodation and contribute to a greener campus and community. Here’s a quick guide on the benefits and how to recycle the easy (and right) way:

Why should you recycle?

Recycling conserves natural resources, reduces landfill waste, and lowers greenhouse gas emissions. Recycling also has direct benefits to you, such as:

  • Avoid fees: Proper recycling reduces the chance you'll damage something in your accommodation and you won't need any extra rubbish disposal services, which can help minimise any waste-related fees.
  • Promoting a clean living environment: Separating waste keeps campus and your shared spaces cleaner and more pleasant.
  • Developing eco-conscious habits: Starting sustainable practices at uni makes it easier to continue recycling in the future.

How to recycle properly

  1. Know what can be recycled: The University of Leicester provides designated bins for different types of recyclable materials. Make sure you’re familiar with the types of waste each bin accepts:Paper and cardboard: Place clean, dry paper, magazines, and cardboard in the paper recycling bins.Plastic: Most plastic bottles and containers are recyclable. Ensure they’re clean and remove any lids or caps if required.Glass: Glass bottles and jars can be recycled, but they need to be emptied and rinsed out.Metal Cans: Aluminium and tin cans can also be recycled after rinsing.
  2. Rinse and dry your recyclables: Always rinse food and drink containers before placing them in the recycling bins. This prevents contamination, which can lead to an entire bin being sent to landfill! A quick rinse only takes a moment and helps keep recycling effective.
  3. Separate your waste: Make it easy by setting up separate bins or bags for recyclable materials in your accommodation. Keep a designated area for recycling in the kitchen or near the main bin so that everyone can access it easily. Make sure everyone knows where each item should go to prevent mixing recyclables with general waste.
  4. Flatten boxes and containers: Flatten any cardboard boxes and plastic bottles to save space. This helps ensure that your shared recycling bin doesn’t fill up too quickly, leaving more room for others’ recyclables.
  5. Dispose of e-waste responsibly: Old electronics, batteries, vapes and chargers should not go in general recycling bins. Check with your reception or student services to find your nearest e-waste disposal location.

Embrace recycling in your daily life, it’s a small effort that leads to a big impact!
