South Asian students are our largest BAME students

At the University of Leicester, we celebrate the rich cultural heritage and diversity that South Asian students bring to our campus. Our commitment is to provide an inclusive and supportive environment where all students can thrive academically, socially, and personally.

South Asian students are our largest demographic within the category of BAME students at the University of Leicester.

Demographic breakdown:

·      As per the most recent student Ethnicity breakdown, 52.1% of students identify as BAME

·      48.3% of all BAME students are (British)-Bangladeshi/ Indian /Pakistani. More generally, 31.2% of all students are Asian or Asian British.

Wellbeing Resources for South Asian Students

·      Adhar Project: provides community-based mental health support for Asian and Black African/Caribbean communities in Leicester, offering services such as drop-in sessions, peer support, and one-to-one help.

·      South Asian Health Action (SAHA): a Leicester-based charity that educates and empowers the South Asian community on health challenges such as diabetes, kidney disease, and organ donations.

·      South Asian Health Hub: is dedicated to enhancing the health and well-being of the South Asian community through research, education, and advocacy. They focus on tackling health inequities and promoting health initiatives.

South Asian Heritage Month

South Asian Heritage Month is celebrated from July 18 to August 17 to honour and recognise the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of South Asian communities in the UK. The month features a variety of events, educational activities, and cultural celebrations aimed at raising awareness and fostering understanding of South Asian heritage. The themes include storytelling, cultural showcases, historical commemorations, and community engagements, highlighting the significant impact of South Asian heritage on British society.

·      GradLink ASEAN: is an award-winning careers site for Southeast Asian students and graduates studying in the UK. It provides essential information on graduate opportunities, connects students with employers across Southeast Asia, and offers resources such as job listings, career advice, and CV building tools. ·      Careers and Employability Service: See how the University can guide you to your perfect opportunity and access the MyCareers portal.
